Southwest Florida—Summer’s Best-Kept Secret
When winter sets in up north, many of us head south for a Florida vacation. But what some people don’t know is that Southwest Florida offers excitement year-round—and especially in the summertime. So, hop in your RV, park at the Golden Palms Luxury Motorcoach Resort, and get ready for some fun!
Southwest Florida Summer in Key West Awaits
Experience a taste of Caribbean culture without leaving the United States. Key West is the southernmost point of Florida, boasting crystal-clear waters, a bevy of bars, and sensational sailing expeditions. The easiest way to get there from the Golden Palms is to jump on the Key West Express, which leaves from Fort Myers Beach, about 15 miles from the Resort. The boat sets sail at 9 a.m. Monday through Thursday year-round, and arrives in Key West at about 12:30 p.m. Sit back and savor the soothing seas of the Gulf on this laid-back cruise complete with a full bar and food. (Note, you can also get the Key West Express from Marco Island.)
Once you’ve exhausted yourself exploring the Hemingway House, strolling down Duval Street, and lunching at Sloppy Joe’s, you can catch the Express at 6 p.m. to head back to Fort Myers Beach. Planning on a longer stay? Bring your luggage on the boat, and Express staff will take it to your hotel and have it back at the dock when you’re ready to leave.
The Everglades are for Everyone
The Everglades were eyed for residential and business development since the 1800s, but efforts to drain the swamp essentially failed. Today, they’re confined to the southern part of the state, which means you have another great place to visit during your stay.
Take advantage of Everglades Excursions, which offers full- and half-day tours that leave from downtown Naples, about 30 miles from the resort. Both tours treat you to a climate-controlled ride through where you’ll learn about the four eco-systems and precious wildlife that thrive in this area. An airboat ride through the backwaters of the Gulf will delight with the sights of alligators, manatee, and other local inhabitants. Stay for the full-day tour and you’ll feast on a luncheon at the City Seafood Restaurant surrounded by picturesque vistas overlooking the Barron River.
